Japanese two-wheeler giant Yamaha Motor Co Ltd said that it will roll
out the world’s cheapest motorcycle priced around Rs 27,000 ($500) and
has set up a R&D centre in Greater Noida to make India a hub of
low-cost motorcycles.
“So far, we have been focusing on sporty, stylish and performance bikes in India. Now, we are looking to increase our presence in the commuter segment,” Hiroyuki Suzuki, CEO & managing director, India Yamaha Motor Pvt Ltd, said.
“Our target is to develop the cheapest bike at around $500 for both India and export markets,” said Toshikazu Kobayashi, managing director, YMRI.

“The company is developing the bike with an engine capacity of 100 cc or
more as smaller bikes with smaller engine do not have good balance. We
will first launch the bike in India. However, we would also explore
other markets like Africa and Latin America,” Kobayashi said without
giving any timeline.
